A calling card is very much like a credit card, the difference
being that it is issued by a Bell operating companies, like Verizon,
AT&T, or Sprint.
These cards serve the purpose of charging local and long distance
calls. Normally, the card holds the number of the telephone number
where you usually receive your phone bills to where the calls will
be charged. Additionally, it has a four digit PIN (Personal Identification
Number) which is used whenever a call is made with the card. This
PIN is often the last four digits of your phone number, although
for security reasons, many calling card companies are now replacing
these PIN digits with random numbers.
In some cases, calls made with calling cards are more expensive
than normal phone rates, but in other cases it is cheaper. The toll
will depend on the company which issues the cards.
